It was more than fifteen years ago that The Painted Heron swung open its doors, on a quaint part of Cheyne walk, Chelsea, a stone’s throw from the Thames, and helped usher in a new era of Indian dining in London. Under the pioneering direction of Chef Yogesh Datta, the team at The Painted Heron have continuously pushed the boundaries of invention in contemporary cooking practice, keeping a strong focus on seasonal British ingredients, breathing new life into the potential of Modern Indian Cuisine to both delight and inspire. TPH of Chelsea takes over the baton from The Painted Heron in 2018 with plant-based dishes taking centre stage and responsibly-sourced food and sustainability at its heart.

After recognising a need for an Indian restaurant that can be a trailblazer again and cater to a more discerning clientele of today, Datta has created a totally new ethos for the menu, removing ghee, cream, butter, yoghurt and any other dairy product from his cooking, making dishes not only lighter, but all vegetarian options vegan friendly. Meat dishes are all free range and from grass-fed animals, all from ethically-run farms, and seafood from sustainable stocks. Datta has also introduced Josper charcoal oven grilled dishes into the constantly evolving menu to add the charm of charcoal grilling.

    YOGESH is widely considered as being one of the pioneers who revolutionised the perception of fine dining Indian food in London with his take of "modern Indian food" with the opening of The Painted Heron ( now TPH of Chelsea) on cheyne walk, Chelsea in 2002.


    Kaansili, Head Chef

    KAANSILI has worked alongside Chef Yogesh for more than two decades, starting off in 5 star hotels in the City of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. A highly skilled and talented chef, he has been the soul of The Painted Heron since it opened in 2002 and is now instrumental in the launch of TPH of Chelsea
